Corn snakes are one of the most popular snake species and ideal for beginner snake keepers - they have a gentle nature, take well to captivity, reproduce proficiently, stay small, and are relatively cheap. There are many colour and pattern morphs commonly available, with new morphs being discovered all the time.
• Naturally tame, they are great for handling
• They do very well in large natural setups with branches and hidey holes
• They don't need any additional lighting (other than natural light from windows)
• They are great feeders
• They are hardy and don't easily become ill
• Like most snakes, they need to be fed mice - you'll need freezer space.
• They do require additional heating - an area up to 29C(85F) is needed for basking.
• They are nocturnal, so you probably won't see them out during the day much.
• They are escape artists - a secure cage is essential!
If you are a beginner, you can start with any age or sex of corn snake. Most corns are already established feeders, but make sure if it is a very young hatchling that they have had at least 4 good feeds on defrost pinkys.
